New Delhi: The Centre is likely introduce new foreign direct investment (FDI) rules for e-commerce companies to check entities set up by the online marketplaces from trading on their own platform.
According to a report in the
Economic Times, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) may issue a clarification through a Press Note, expressly prohibiting e-commerce platforms from holding stake in a seller, directly or indirectly.
“There are concerns that some ecommerce companies are not following the rules and hold indirect stakes in affiliates. This has come to our notice,” the publication quoted one official as saying.

The new WhatsApp privacy policy could be viewed as an abuse of its dominant position. Although there are plenty of WhatsApp alternatives that offer better privacy and features, users often find it tough to switch to other apps due to the lack of interoperability. The dominant positioning coupled with the updated privacy policy that allows metadata sharing with Facebook apps could attract the CCI’s attention, according to The Economic Times (ET).
