Growing need for carbon tax Posted : 2021-04-13 17:03 Surcharge inevitable to address climate change Four government ministries, including the Ministry of Economy and Finance, have recently requested the Korea Institute of Public Finance to conduct research into how to put a dollar value on carbon emissions. Industry watchers say the Moon Jae-in administration, which has declared the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, seems to have taken the first steps toward introducing a carbon tax. In December, the government said it would overhaul the tax system to attain net-zero carbon dioxide emissions, and create a climate fund. The finance ministry has also included a plan to shift to an eco-friendly, low-carbon economy in its policy goals for this year. According to the plan, the government will craft a draft bill to transition toward a decarbonized society in a move to address climate change.
