The Biden administration’s new budget proposes to increase federal spending. While little is specifically geared toward school technology, some funds could help close the digital divide and bolster mental health services.
April 26, 2021 • Earlier this month, the Biden administration released a draft of its $1.5 trillion budget, which asks for significant increases in education spending that could potentially add to a mountain of federal funds proposed to cover virtual learning options and close the digital divide.
Among the draft’s proposals, the administration has asked for a 40.8 percent increase in Department of Education funding, which would increase funding to nearly $103 billion. Of that, about $36 billion would go toward Title I grants for low-income school districts, representing an increase of about $20 billion from the current fiscal year.

Democrats Push Education Secretary to Address K-12 Cyber Threats
Reps. Doris Matsui, D-Calif., and Jim Langevin, D-R.I., urged Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in an April 1 letter to address the growing cybersecurity threat facing K-12 schools by issuing guidance that will give K-12 schools more confidence in making investments in increased cybersecurity measures.

The legislators cited a recent report from the K-12 Cybersecurity Resource Center that found a surge in cyberattacks against K-12 schools, and saying that changes in education modalities due to the pandemic are largely to blame. Specifically, there were 408 cyberattacks against K-12 schools in 2020, compared to 348 in 2019.
