Virginia Supreme Court clears way for removal of Charlottesville s Confederate statues

The decision ends a years-long legal battle over the removal of two statues, one of Stonewall Jackson and another of Robert E. Lee, from city parks that previously bore their names.  The Statues accepted by the City of Charlottesville in the 1920s were not acquired pursuant to the authority conveyed by [the state law governing the erection and removal of war memorials], so the removal or covering of those statues is not regulated by the prohibitions stated in [the law], wrote the state Supreme Court in its decision.

Lee and Stonewall Jackson were erected in Charlottesville in the 1920 s.  In 2017, the city announced plans to remove them, setting off a deadly rally by white supremacists and years of legal challenges.   According to the court s ruling, the city had the power to remove the statues all along.   .The Statues were erected long before there was a statute which both authorized a city’s erection of a war memorial or monument and regulated the disturbance of or interference with that war memorial or monument, Justice Bernard Goodwyn wrote in the opinion.

No July 4th Fireworks at Mount Rushmore This Year After Controversial 2020 Trump Event On 3/12/21 at 6:45 PM EST The National Park Service (NPS) has refused to allow the state of South Dakota to hold a July 4th fireworks celebration at Mount Rushmore this year. The massive national memorial features four past presidents faces carved into the Black Hills of Keystone, South Dakota. Although former President Donald Trump held a 4th of July celebration at the memorial in 2020, NPS Regional Director Herbert Frost rejected South Dakota s request for 2021.
