Owner of currency exchange house pleads guilty to intentionally violating anti-money laundering laws

San Diego   Marco A. Gonzalez, a local business owner of MRK Casa de Cambio, pleaded guilty in federal court today to violating laws and regulations designed to prevent money laundering by customers of his currency exchange business. Special Agents from Homeland Security Investigations ( HSI ) led the investigation into millions of dollars of transactions at MRK Casa de Cambio from approximately 2015 to 2020. As admitted in the plea agreement entered today before U.S. Magistrate Judge William V. Gallo, Gonzalez knew of, and intentionally failed to adhere to, the anti-money laundering ( AML ) laws and regulations imposed on currency exchange businesses like MRK Casa de Cambio. As with any U.S. financial institution, casas de cambio, currency exchanges houses, and other money services businesses must comply with the United States Bank Secrecy Act, found at Title 31, United States Code and Title 31, Code of Federal Regulations, which requires these businesses to assist U.S. govern

Ron Fink: Wastewater Permit Issues in Lompoc; an Unforced Error With EPA

No one thinks much about the sewer system in any city; if all your waste disappears folks are happy. But some people think a lot about these systems and one group is the Environmental Protection Agency. All publicly owned treatment works (POTW) in the United States operate under conditions specified in a treatment permit issued by the EPA through Regional Water Control Boards (RWCB) consistent with National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) requirements.    These permits list specific conditions that the operator, in this case the city of Lompoc, must comply with.   On April 20 the Lompoc City Council conducted a hearing to discuss responses to an administrative order issued by the EPA concerning deficiencies found during an audit of wastewater plant operations.

Wyoming Highway Patrol participating in biggest commercial carrier enforcement blitz

This blitz will focus on hours of service and lighting violations. The WHP will participate in this blitz by checking Hours of Service violations and lighting violations. “According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the lighting violation “lamps inoperable” (Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations 393.9) was the number one vehicle violation in fiscal 2020, accounting for approximately 12.24% of all vehicle violations discovered that year. During last year’s International Road Check, the top driver out-of-service violation category in North America was hours of service, accounting for 34.7% of all driver out-of-service conditions,” WHP said. Truck drivers who are hauling COVID-19 vaccine shipments will NOT be held up for inspection unless there is a major safety violation.

There s nothing special about CVSA s Roadcheck

May 04, 2021 While special emphasis will be placed on driver logs and lights during this year s Roadcheck, it s still open season on the rest of the vehicle and the person in the driver s seat. Beginning last Monday, CCJ published a six-part series on Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s Roadcheck blitz, which kicks off today.  I hope the nearly bumper-to-bumper series was a simple, high-level reminder of basic maintenance best practices. Maybe it served as the impetus for a thorough system check just in case. Safety and solid maintenance fundamentals are always important, and they are no more important today through Thursday than they were all of last month, or from this coming Friday and beyond. Safety is an everyday thing and there s really nothing special about CVSA s Roadcheck.
