ATLANTA – Majority Whip and State Senator Steve Gooch (R-51) has asked Governor Brian Kemp (R) to halt the federal unemployment relief in Georgia.
In a letter sent to Kemp’s desk today, Gooch details how many small businesses are struggling to find people to work. Many restaurants can’t fully open because they don’t have the staff.
“While we are still recovering from the economic impact of the pandemic, local business owners are desperate for employees – not customers. Every job creator agrees that this workforce shortage is a direct result of the federal expanded unemployment benefits, where employees are incentivized to stay home and collect government checks that often exceed what they would earn at the job site. This labor shortage has caused many restaurants to alter their hours of operation and is having an oversized impact on the supply chain of every sect
Alabama to End Federal Pandemic Unemployment Benefits Amid Labor Shortage
Alabama has joined a growing list of GOP-led states that are ending participation in federal pandemic-related unemployment programs amid concerns that the benefits are leading to a shortage in people looking for work.
Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, cited an increase in job postings along with complaints from businesses saying they can’t find workers to hire for her decision to withdraw from the programs. The governor flagged the unemployment benefits boost, which was approved last March under the CARES Act before it was extended, as contributing to the labor shortage.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) said Tuesday the state will stop participating in multiple pandemic-related federal unemployment benefit programs because of a workforce shortage.
“Effective June 12, 2021, the State of Iowa will end its participation in federal pandemic-related unemployment benefit programs. Iowa will continue to provide regular state unemployment insurance benefits to those eligible under the applicable state code,” she said in a press release, according to KCCI.
The week ending on June 12 will be the final week the listed programs are available in the state: Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA), Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC), and Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation (MEUC).
Governor Reynolds To End Federal Unemployment Benefits For Iowans
Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds announced Tuesday morning that she ll be ending the state s federal unemployment benefits program soon, due to a recovering economy and strong labor market in the state. The move comes to deal with what s called the State of Iowa s severe workforce shortage.
When Will The Specific Benefits End?
According to a Tuesday morning press release, the State of Iowa will continue to pay normal unemployment claims but will be ending its involvement in pandemic-related unemployment benefits on Saturday, June 12.
Exactly What Will Be Coming To An End?
Iowa will no longer pay the additional $300 weekly unemployment payments that are part of the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program. The last check that will include this payment will be for the week ending on June 12.
