After the Department of Justice charged more than 100 people last year with fraudulently seeking over $360 million in CARES Act emergency loans and other payments, the federal government has taken additional steps this year to combat fraud in federal COVID relief programs. During the week of March 21-27, a total of 238 initial weekly claims for state unemployment benefits were processed by the Department of Labor and Regulation. This is a decrease of 57 claims from the prior week’s total of 295.
The latest number of continued state claims is 4,941 for the week ending March 20, an increase of 114 from the prior week’s total of 4,827. This indicates the number of unemployed workers eligible for and receiving benefits after their initial claim.
For week ending March 27, a total of $1.2 million was paid out in state benefits, in addition to $1.5 million in Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), $152,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) and $282,000 in Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) benefits.
