Unemployment benefits paid to NJ residents since March 2020 New Jerseyans who lost their jobs during the pandemic have had a tough time keeping their heads above water. Unemployment insurance helps, of course: $31.1 billion in benefits have been paid out to residents since March 2020. Those funds come from both federal programs and state coffers. The feds’ portion comes from Lost Wages Assistance ($1.4 billion), Federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation ($3 billion), Federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation Under the Extension ($4.5 billion), Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance ($4.9 billion) and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation Under the CARES Act ($9 billion). The rest of the funds came from the state: NJ Unemployment Insurance Benefits ($7.6 billion) and NJ Extended Unemployment Benefits ($687 million).
