Russian medics sound alarm over Alexei Navalny s blood test results

A doctor for jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has issued a stark warning about the 44-year-old s condition in his third week of hunger strike. Physician Yaroslav Ashikhmin wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday that he had received test results from Navalny s family that made him fear his patient could die at any minute . According to him, Navalny s test results showed sharply elevated levels of potassium, which can bring on cardiac arrest, and heightened creatinine levels, which indicate impaired kidneys. Anastasia Vasilyeva, head of the Navalny-backed Russian Alliance of Doctors union, also posted a picture of what was said to be a copy of the blood test on Twitter.

Kudryavtsev was not summoned to the trial to testify, which investigators said was not necessary because he was neither a witness nor a plaintiff in the case. Navalny was arrested on January 17 upon his return to Russia from Germany, where he received life-saving treatment for the poisoning in Siberia in August. Navalny has insisted that his poisoning with a Soviet-style chemical nerve agent was ordered directly by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The FSB and the Kremlin have denied any role in the poisoning. In February, a Moscow court ruled that while in Germany, Navalny had violated the terms of parole from an old embezzlement case that is widely considered as being politically motivated.
