President Joe Biden’s claims that there are no background checks at firearms sales at gun shows have drawn criticism, with fact-checking websites saying that it is false.
Biden during a White House speech on Thursday asserted that a person could buy “whatever you want” at a gun show without a background check.
“Most people don’t know it, you walk into a store and you buy a gun, you have a background check. But you go to a gun show, you can buy whatever you want and no background check,” Biden said.

Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Athens, hopes his new gun legislation can speed up federal background checks to make the transfer of firearms from licensed dealers to buyers easier.
Clyde, owner of the gun store Clyde Armory in Athens, introduced House Resolution 1787 on March 11. The measure would speed up the waiting period for the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check on gun sales from three business days to three calendar days.
Prospective gun buyers are required under a permanent provision in the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to undergo a National Instant Criminal Background Check.
A week after announcing the arrests of four Philadelphia men on firearms charges following surveillance at the Morgantown Gun Show in Berks County, Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Monday that the stateâs largest gun show promoter has agreed to ban the sale of do-it-yourself gun kits.
Shapiro called the ban of ghost gun kits imposed by Breinigsville-based firearms dealer Eagle Arms at all its gun shows a significant step in curtailing the growing threat to public safety from the privately assembled firearms.
âThis is a significant step,â Shapiro said, standing at a podium placarded with the words âUntrackableâ and âGhost Gunsâ and displaying one of the 80% ready-made receiver kits that were displayed by the hundreds at the Morgantown show.
