Russia’s population dropped by over half a million people between January 2020 and January 2021, the country’s Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) revealed on Thursday. The drop is the largest on record since 2005.
According to Rosstat, Russia’s population was documented as 146.238 million people as of January 1, 2021. A year ago, that number was 146.748 million. Russia’s state news agency TASS described the drop as the “first dramatic decline” since 2005, and the first time since 2017 that the population dropped to under 146.8 million people.

MOSCOW. Jan 28 (Interfax) - The population of Russia was 146,238,185 on January 1, 2021, the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) said in a report concerning its preliminary estimate of the Russian population as of the beginning of the year.
Russia had a population of 146,748,643 on January 1, 2020, of 146,780,700 on January 1, 2019, of 146,880,400 on January 1, 2018, and of 146,804,400 on January 1, 2017.
The statistical data indicates that the Russian population has decreased by 510,500 over the past year. The last major decline in the Russian population was seen in 2005, when the population decreased from 143.8 million to 143.2 million at the beginning of 2006.

MOSCOW, January 28. /TASS/. The number of Russians with incomes below the subsistence level amounted to 19.6 mln people or 13.3% in January-September 2020. In the Q3, the number of poor people increased by 1.2 mln compared to the same period in 2019 and amounted to 18.8 mln, according to the Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) materials.
It was noted that in 2019 for 9 months there were 19.2 mln poor people (13.1%) in Russia. Compared to the third quarter of 2019, the number of poor people increased by 1.2 mln people, or 0.8 percentage points, Rosstat said in a statement. In 2019, for the third quarter, the number of poor people was 17.6 mln.
