The statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia stated that Ethiopia “finds it unfortunate to learn about the decision by the United States to continue exerting undue pressure on Ethiopia by imposing visa restrictions on Ethiopian officials” Below is the full statement: “This is in addition to its previous decisions to restrict economic and security assistance to Ethiopia. News: Ethiopia calls US visa sanctions regrettable, says it will reassess its relations

Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Addis Abeba, May 24/2021 – Following the latest U.S. announcement of visa restrictions for “any current or former” Ethiopian, Eritrean officials “responsible for, or complicit in, undermining resolution of the crisis in Tigray,” the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has responded to the decision by the United States stating it as a continuation to exerting undue pressure on Ethiopia. The MFA in its statement, indicated that the decision came at a time when the Ethiopian government has been engaging positively and constructively with the U.S. administration on issues of common concern in which the Ethiopian Government welcomed the new U.S. Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Mr.  Jeffrey Felt man, who met and held extensive consultations with senior government officials, including the Prime Minister.
