• Say it affects writing, book publishing
Stakeholders in the academia and legal industries have decried the country’s dying reading culture, saying it is adversely affecting writing and book publishing.
At the 11th edition of the Coal City Book Convention organised by the Delta Book Club in Enugu, they said that the future of the country remained bleak with the abysmal reading culture and urged those in authority to do all that was possible to ignite the culture in the youths.
At the occasion, which featured poetry recital, unveiling of a magazine, “The Writer” and conferment of life awards on some academics, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Mrs. Justina Offia, said that the low reading culture in the country was worrisome and advocated for a campaign to revive it in the youths.

THE Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI, Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji has stated that no Nigerian knows the exact volume of crude oil produced in Nigeria especially at deep offshore fields.
Dr. Orji explained that the absence of meters at wellheads and the lack of capacity to monitor deep offshore means Nigeria do not have the exact amount of crude oil produced in the country.
He disclosed this on Thursday during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Dr. Mansur Liman in Abuja.
NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa disclosed this in Abuja when he and his team visited the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed.
Marwa said the agency had successfully arrested 2,175 drug traffickers, seized 2,050,765.33 kilograms of illicit drugs as well as seized cash and drug worth N75bin.
He said 15 million Nigerians between the ages of 15 and 60 were using drugs, adding that 25 percent of them were females.
He said visit was to solicit the ministry’s support for media coverage by the Nigerian Television Authority and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria in agency’s fight against drug abuse.
Responding, the minister said, “The kind of vicious banditry and kidnapping for ransom that our country has witnessed in recent times cannot be totally separated from illicit drug use and their effects on users who take to crime.”
