Maintaining focus and keeping grades up has been challenging for many high school students over the past year that they have spent learning virtually due to the pandemic. Alabama becomes fourth state to require FAFSA to graduate high school Updated Apr 08, 2021; . Alabama is now the fourth state to require high school students to complete the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, before getting their diploma. The state board of education okayed the change with a 6 to 3 vote at Thursday’s meeting in Montgomery. The graduating Class of 2022 will be the first to need to fill out the FAFSA in order to graduate. Students will have a way to opt out and still graduate by having their parents complete a waiver form. State Superintendent Eric Mackey told board members that other states with the requirement have seen a dramatic increase in the number of students applying for financial aid. Texas, Louisiana and Illinois also require FAFSAs, and others are considering similar requirements.
