Firefighters with cancer could soon get more help with medical bills

A bill that would make it easier for Arizona firefighters who get certain cancers to access workers’ compensation benefits is headed to the governor’s desk. Senate Bill 1451 would remove the requirement that firefighters prove their cancer was caused by toxins they were exposed to on the job in order to get their employer to pay for their treatment. It also would expand access to workers’ compensation benefits, which pay for medical expenses beyond typical health insurance, to fire investigators and add two new types of cancer to the list of presumptive occupational diseases. A huge thank you to the House for voting on my firefighter cancer bill that we ve been working on for 6 years, Sen. Paul Boyer, R-Glendale, posted on Twitter.

What you need to know about the Newsom recall

Over the past year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been caught up in a recall effort to get him out of Sacramento. The initiative is being led by the Republican National Committee, the California Republican Party and members of the GOP. Recall supporters have submitted an estimated 2.1 million signatures, well over the 1.5 million votes needed to get this on the ballot. This is the sixth attempt at recalling Newsom. What is a recall? A recall is a mechanism of direct democracy that allows constituents to strip power from an elected official by vote. Californians amended the state constitution for this purpose in 1911, outlining the Golden State’s procedures for this mechanism.
