New commander named at Fort Bragg for U S Special Operations Command

The Fayetteville Observer Editor s note: This story has been corrected to state that Lt. Gen. Bryan Fenton will be leading the Joint Special Operations Command, which falls under the U.S. Special Operations Command. A previous version of the story incorrectly listed one of his commands.  The Department of Defense has announced 13 leadership changes for Fort Bragg, since the start of 2021. On Jan. 25, the chief of staff of the Army announced that Lt. Gen. Bryan P. Fenton would be the commander of the Joint Special Operations Command and Joint Special Operations Command Forward.  Fenton previously served as the senior military assistant to the secretary of defense in  Washington, D.C.

The Nigerian Military s Missing Link: A Joint Special Operations Command

A focused and dedicated command that draws on the expertise of elite Special Operations Forces (SOFs), such as the navy’s Special Boat Service, would improve execution of ongoing military operations against violent extremism while enabling better-coordinated strategic planning. Up to now, the government, rather than address the lack of coordination directly, has stuck mostly to replacing service chiefs and increasing manpower in regions blighted by insecurity the number of which is growing. An advantage of creating a JSOC is that it would unify the chain of command; at present, Nigeria suffers from an overreliance of tactical direction from the command-and-control structure in Abuja. American Special Ops Forces Are Everywhere

Within the span of a few decades, the United States has utterly transformed its military, or at least the military that is actively fighting. This has taken place with little fanfare and little public scrutiny. But without any conscious plan, I have seen some of the evolution firsthand. One of my early books,  Black Hawk Down, was about a disastrous U.S. Special Ops mission in Somalia. Another,  Guests of the Ayatollah, about the Iran hostage crisis, detailed an abortive but pivotal Special Ops rescue mission. U.S. Special Operators were involved in the successful hunt for the drug lord Pablo Escobar, the subject of
