The Gadsden City Council on Tuesday approved the city’s application for an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant.
The grant would total $35,458 and be used for a new X-ray system for the Gadsden Police Department’s bomb squad.
The new system would allow the squad to easily assess suspicious packages for potential bombs.
“They can come on site and see if a package has a bomb inside of it or not, and then they will also be using the funds on miscellaneous equipment such as wire cutters,” said council member Jason Wilson.
In addition to the system, the squad would receive education and training on the equipment through the National Incident-Based Reporting System, as it is required by the Department of Justice.
