The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) features a one-year graduate-level program that graduates about 600 resident and 1,000 distance learning students each year. Students earn Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) credit and either a diploma or a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies or Defense and Strategic Studies.
Established in 1884, NWC is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. More than 50,000 students have graduated since its first class of nine students in 1885, and about 300 of today’s active duty admirals, generals and senior executive service leaders are alumni. Since creating a program for international officers in 1956, the college has more than 4,500 international alumni from 137 countries worldwide. NWC College of Distance Education Hosts Naval Command and Staff Online Program Graduation
NEWPORT, R.I. - The U.S. Naval War College’s (NWC) College of Distance Education (CDE) hosted their Naval Command and Staff online program graduation in a virtual ceremony honoring 183 students on Dec. 17.
The graduates, who are U.S. federal civilian employees and military officers in the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, Merchant Marine and Public Health Service, received the Naval Command and Staff diploma, including the Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) Phase I credit.
The class gathered virtually to hear remarks from Rear Adm. Shoshana Chatfield, U.S. Naval War College president.

NEWPORT, R.I. - The U.S. Naval War College’s (NWC) College of Distance Education (CDE) hosted their NWC at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) graduation in a virtual ceremony honoring 69 students on March 18.
The class gathered virtually to hear remarks from Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, Naval War College president.
“I want to take this time to recognize the incredible amount of work and effort that you put forward in order to earn your command and staff diploma and the completion of joint professional military education level one certification you have committed countless hours in class,” said Chatfield.
