The weather is warming, coronavirus numbers are dwindling, restrictions are easing, and Massachusetts residents might be on the verge of experiencing an unfamiliar phenomenon: something to look forward to.
On Friday, masks will no longer be required outdoors, as long as it is possible to socially distance. By May 10, large venues, both indoors and outdoors, can operate at 25 percent capacity. By Memorial Day, street festivals, bars, beer gardens, and wineries can reopen. And by August 1, all industry restrictions will be lifted. (Though Bostonâs reopening timeline will trail the stateâs by three weeks).

March through June, Ragtag Cinema is working to ignite conversations about science. Combining introduction videos from guest speakers with movies and documentaries, the cinema is hosting its first year of Science on Screen, a nationwide program that provides grants to independent theaters to make science more accessible to the public.
Ted Rogers, Ragtag’s cinema programmer, said he’s always working to further the cinema’s outreach to engage with the community. He said he wanted to take part in Science on Screen after becoming aware of the series in other theaters and thinking about the “wealth of incredible speakers” Columbia has to offer.

BROOKLINE, MA Movie theater lovers rejoice: For the first time since the beloved Coolidge Corner Theatre closed more than a year ago amid the pandemic, the iconic cinema will begin to open its doors.
The Coolidge Corner Theatre is reopening May 13, with a screening of a movie that has special significance for the theater, the nonprofit announced Thursday. This has been a long journey, and it is especially meaningful for us to be reopening with Spike Lee s masterful Do the Right Thing, which was one of the first films screened at the theatre after a dedicated group of community members saved the theatre and reinvented it as a nonprofit, back in 1989, said Katherine Tallman, the executive director and CEO of The Coolidge Theatre.

WORCESTER The city’s beloved and belittled “Turtle Boy” better think twice next time it wants to tussle with an unsuspecting tortoise from behind because, after a 30-year hibernation, “Snapper” has popped its ugly, hungry head out of its mutated shell.
A true Worcester creation, “Snapper” refers to both an unfinished independent film project about a shell-encrusted killer reptile on a feeding frenzy at Coes Pond (renamed Lost Lake ) and the subject of a new short-film documentary, “Snapper: The Man-Eating Turtle Movie That Never Got Made,” by Providence-based filmmaker John Campopiano.
“Snapper: The Man-Eating Turtle Movie That Never Got Made” is being screened Friday through next Thursday in the Coolidge Corner Theatre s Virtual Screening Room in Brookline.
