Donald Holly Fortnum

Dr. Donald Holly Fortnum, 88, professor of chemistry, emeritus, Gettysburg College, died Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2021, at Gettysburg Hospital with his family by his side. Born April 2, 1932, Don was the son of the late Niels and Ruth (Holly) Fortnum. Growing up in Berlin, Wisc., next to his family-owned machine shop and automobile dealership he enjoyed managing the football and basketball teams and playing golf, tennis and chess. In addition to being selected to Badger Boys State, Don was awarded the honor of Eagle Scout. Don earned his bachelor of science degree in chemistry and mathematics from Carroll College in May 1954. While at Carroll, Don was president of the Delta Rho Upsilon fraternity, Interfraternity Council, and Wesley Fellowship. A member of the Student Christian Association, the House Council, the publications committee, the American Chemical Society, the staff of the student paper, and the intramural program, he was also elected to Delta Sigma Nu scholastic honor society.

Walter William Ferchland

Walter William Ferchland, 91, of Gettysburg, died, Monday, Jan. 25, 2021, at the Gardens of Gettysburg. Walter was born in Brooklyn, New York, on May 13, 1928. He was the oldest son of Walter and Mary Railly Ferchland and the last survivor of their three children. Walter often said the joy of his life was marrying his childhood sweetheart, Doris, on Nov. 11, 1950, the beginning of a 70-year romance. They bought their first home in Levittown, N.Y., and raised their children there. Walter worked as an accountant at the Hempstead Bus Company and later oversaw a depot of over 500 drivers and mechanics for the Long Island Metropolitan Suburban Bus Authority (MSBA). He was loved by his employees and was honored for his 28 years of service by MSBA administration when he retired in 1990.

Robert M Reed

Robert M. Reed (Bob), formerly of Gettysburg went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021, on his 87th birthday, surrounded by his children. Robert passed after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease and short battle of COVID-19. Robert was born on Jan. 28, 1934, to Walter and Reba Reed in Huntingdon, Pa. After graduating from Huntingdon High School in 1952, Robert immediately enlisted in the Air Force where he was a crew member on a B29 Bomber and boom operator on a KB29 refueling tanker. After an honorable discharge from the Air Force, he went on to study history education at Indiana State Teachers College in Indiana, Pa., and graduated in 1960.
