Borough sees slight revenue excess in FY2020

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly breezed through its regular meeting Monday night adjourning after only 23 minutes.
Reports from the borough mayor, emergency manager and borough manager took up most of the meeting. Items passed on the consent calendar included ratification of an amendment to an agreement with the State of Alaska regarding COVID-19 testing for travelers, and a correction to the term of office for the Planning Commissioner. Original correspondence indicated the term was to end in March 2023 however it ends in March 2022.

The coronavirus pandemic shaped a strange year in the far southeast reaches of the state. On St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, officials in Ketchikan reported the first positive coronavirus test in Southeast Alaska.
That was before masks, travel restrictions and lockdowns and the virus spread quickly at first. After the governor ordered some businesses to close and local officials encouraged folks to hunker down, the immediate threat passed.
But the threat of the pandemic was two-pronged not just a public health crisis, but an economic catastrophe for Ketchikan and much of Southeast Alaska after health officials banned cruising in U.S. waters.

By MARY KAUFFMAN Thursday PM (SitNews) Ketchikan, Alaska - Ketchikan Mayor Rodney Dial is sponsoring a resolution for the Borough Assembly to consider at Monday night’s meeting that will support the protection of individual civil rights relative to COVID-19 vaccinations.
Mayor Dial is requesting the Assembly to support his proposed resolution which calls on merchants and service providers to refrain from discriminating against any individual by denying that person access to goods or services based upon their COVID-19 vaccination status or failure to provide that information.
