Ferrari supply engines to Alfa Romeo and Haas and in return, get the chance for members of their Driver Academy to learn the F1 ropes with a view to potentially racing for the Scuderia in the future. Antonio Giovinazzi came up through the Ferrari programme and is heading into his third year as an Alfa Romeo driver, while the latest prospect to be blooded is Mick Schumacher who will race for Haas in 2021.

Schumacher, son of Michael, the seven-time former World Champion, won this year’s Formula 2 title and has been signed by Haas to make the step up into the big time next season. The 21-year-old drove in Friday practice at Yas Marina and then four days later, took part in the post-season ‘young driver’ test where he was slowest of the 15 runners – but Haas’ director of engineering, Ayao Komatsu, praised his “excellent attitude” and understanding of the day’s program.

Binotto: Schumacher could have difficult year

Schumacher, son of Michael, the seven-time former World Champion, steps up next year to join the Haas team after capturing the Formula 2 drivers’ title. A Ferrari Academy driver, the 21-year-old German has shown throughout his career so far that despite being a relatively slow starter when he joins a new team or category, once he is fully up to speed he becomes a really formidable force. And the same could happen again in F1, according to Ferrari team principal Binotto, as Schumacher begins in the elite series at a team who were among the backmarkers for the duration of 2020 with a car they were not developing.

Schumacher slowest but attitude was excellent

Schumacher was the only Haas driver taking part at Yas Marina, with his 2021 team-mate and fellow rookie Nikita Mazepin not in action. Although the German completed the third highest number of laps, his best time was over 3.5 seconds down on the fastest set by Fernando Alonso in the Renault – who was given a special dispensation by the FIA to participate. Nevertheless, Haas were pleased with what they had seen from the son of Michael Schumacher, the seven-time former World Champion, considering it had been comfortably his longest stint in the car.
