The Austrian has signed a new three-year-deal to remain team principal and CEO of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, although he also made a ‘lifetime commitment’ to the Silver Arrows by becoming equal owner of the team alongside Daimler and INEOS. But as for his team principal duties, Wolff has made it clear he will relinquish them when he finds the right person to replace him, but that is yet to happen.

Wolff’s new three-year deal ‘a misunderstanding’ PlanetF1 20/12/2020 © Getty Images Toto Wolff Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, has said there has been “a misunderstanding” over the length of his renewed commitment to the Formula 1 team. One of the long-running storylines from the 2020 season has been the future of Wolff at Mercedes, with his previous contract expiring at the end of campaign. He spent a lot of the season assessing his options and his main fear was becoming good and no longer great at being the person to guide Mercedes to more World Championship success. But, on Friday, December 18, after adding another title double to the vast collection of trophies in the Mercedes cabinet, the Silver Arrows made two major announcements.

Wolff: The pandemic has made F1 stronger

Wolff: The pandemic has made F1 stronger PlanetF1 16/12/2020 © Getty Images Toto Wolff Toto Wolff believes that while the global pandemic presented Formula 1 with various challenges, the sport will come out of it stronger. The rapid spread of COVID-19 forced the start of the season to be postponed mere hours before it was set to get underway in Melbourne as members of the paddock tested positive. The campaign couldn’t get underway until July, and when it did, various protocols had to be put in place and the calendar had to be hugely adjusted. Nevertheless, the sport managed to put together a 17-race season that saw no major spreads of the virus through the paddock, and Wollf thinks that F1 has become stronger as a result.
