Brundle picks Hamilton s Turkish GP as 2020 highlight

Brundle picks Hamilton’s Turkish GP as 2020 highlight PlanetF1 31/12/2020 © Getty Images Lewis Hamilton Ex-F1 driver turned pundit Martin Brundle has picked Sir Lewis Hamilton’s title-winning drive in Turkey as his highlight of the 2020 season. Hamilton had the chance to secure a record-equalling seventh World Championship at the Turkish Grand Prix, though the extremely slippery new surface and rain was making life very difficult in the W11. Ultimately Hamilton would qualify P6, 4.795 seconds slower than Lance Stroll on pole. The same struggle for pace and grip stayed with Hamilton in the opening stages of the race, but after stabalising himself in the midfield, Hamilton found a whole other gear and pulled off the one-stop strategy to take his completely worn down intermediate tyres to the end and take victory by over 31 seconds, sealing a seventh title in true style.

Arise, Sir Lewis! Hamilton to become F1 s sixth knight

The 35-year-old Briton was already an MBE, which he received for services to motor racing in 2008 after winning the first of those record-equalling seven world titles. A report from the Daily Mail states that United Kingdom Prime Minister Boris Johnson has intervened to ensure Hamilton’s knighthood was passed through by placing him on the ‘Diplomatic and Overseas List’. Hamilton now becomes the fourth Formula 1 driver to be knighted after two fellow Britons, Sir Stirling Moss and Sir Jackie Stewart, and Australia’s Sir Jack Brabham.

Mick: Nothing random about Hamilton s success

Mick: Nothing ‘random’ about Hamilton’s success PlanetF1 22/12/2020 © Getty Images Lewis Hamilton 44 Mick Schumacher does not believe Lewis Hamilton’s record-equalling success is down to his car, and nor was his father’s. 2020 was a season of dominance for Hamilton, who put himself equal with Michael Schumacher on seven World Championships while also surpassing the legendary German’s record for most career wins, armed with the Mercedes W11. Mercedes have won the past seven Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles in a row, but the W11 was viewed as their most dominant car yet, leading Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to suggest that 90% of the grid could win in that W11.

Hamilton s 2020 penalties won t happen again

Hamilton’s 2020 penalties ‘won’t happen again’ PlanetF1 22/12/2020 © Getty Images Lewis Hamilton PA Lewis Hamilton has insisted the costly penalties he incurred during the 2020 season “won’t happen again” – but he will keep “trying to find an edge”. In three races, Hamilton was sanctioned by the stewards and while it did not stop him from marching to a record-equalling seventh World Championship title, he would almost certainly have won more than 11 times but for those indiscretions. Each occasion was for a different type of misdemeanour. There was a mid-race incident with Alex Albon in the opening Austrian Grand Prix, while the Mercedes team were at fault when Hamilton was called into the pits under a red light while leading the Italian Grand Prix.

Rosberg: Hamilton not the complete driver Schumi was

Rosberg: Hamilton not ‘complete driver’ like Schumi PlanetF1 22/12/2020 © Getty Images Lewis Hamilton with Michael Schumacher helmet Nico Rosberg feels Lewis Hamilton isn’t quite the “complete” driver that Michael Schumacher was in his Formula 1 career. Naturally due to Hamilton’s run of dominance in Formula 1 there have been constant comparisons to Schumacher, and in a 2020 season where Hamilton surpassed Schumacher’s record for most race wins and matched his tally of seven World Championships, those comparisons have only become more frequent. It seems almost everyone in the Formula 1 community has weighed in on the debate, while some have stayed tight-lipped when pushed for an opinion, but Rosberg was clear that Hamilton isn’t the “complete” driver that Schumacher was.
