RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK – A “launching pad” to link universities and businesses is coming to The Frontier in RTP.
In a partnership announced Tuesday, the UNC Kenan-Flagler Entrepreneurship Center will open an office at The Frontier startup-focused campus that is operated by the Research Triangle Foundation. The RTF oversees the Park.
The office will serve as a place where UNC faculty and students can work with RTP companies.
“This will be a launching pad for strengthening collaboration between universities and businesses,” said Scott Levitan, CEO of the RTF.
Added Doug Shackelford, dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School: “With this partnership, the Entrepreneurship Center will serve as a direct connection point to companies in RTP for our student talent and our expertise and thought leadership. This close connection with leaders in industry will be a key leverage point for both our school and those companies.”

In May, as a pandemic-induced recession loomed, North Carolina budget officials scaled back tax revenue estimates and braced for a shortfall that could be even worse.
Seven months later, there’s a welcome surprise. State tax revenues have exceeded those grim projections.
Revenue in fiscal year 2019-20 (which ended on June 30) surpassed the forecast by $513 million (2.2 percent). In the first five months of this fiscal year, General Fund revenue is up over the same period in the last fiscal year by $426 million (4.4 percent). Sales tax revenue – boosted by a tax on online sales that have soared during the pandemic – is up significantly.

Roller coaster enthusiast Gregg Condon hasn’t been able to jump on his favorite thrill rides since the pandemic forced nearly all of California’s theme parks to close nine months ago.
But he recently returned to Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia with his family for a more sedate experience: a drive through the amusement park to admire trees, buildings and oversized decorations adorned with thousands of multicolored twinkling lights, accompanied by blaring holiday music.
“There are certain things that can’t be done in 2020, but I think Magic Mountain did a fantastic job of adapting to a very tough situation,” the Oxnard resident said.
