LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon and his wife tested positive for COVID-19, he announced Wednesday in the spirit of full transparency and accountability.
The announcement comes after Harmon received his first vaccination dose against the coronavirus alongside a bipartisan delegation in the Kentucky Capitol Rotunda on Monday.
Harmon and his wife have mild symptoms, he said in a statement, and are taking all necessary steps to self-isolate and follow the recommendations of public health officials and the CDC.
Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19.
Harmon said his wife tested positive Tuesday morning, in a release, and after taking a test immediately learning of her diagnosis, he had tested positive. Harmon added they are experiencing mild symptoms and are taking all necessary steps to self-isolate and follow public health officials and the CDC’s recommendations.
He said while the test result comes a day after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, he still has full faith in the vaccine and the need for as many people to receive it as quickly as possible.
Kentucky Auditor Mike Harmon announced Tuesday afternoon his office completed its annual audit of the state’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and issued a qualified opinion.
A qualified opinion is an auditor’s opinion that the financials are fairly presented, except for a specified area. In the report, Harmon said the Unemployment Insurance Fund had poor internal controls over benefit payments, which increased the risk of fraud and undetected material misstatements.
He added during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2020, the Office of Unemployment Insurance, to expedite unemployment benefit payments, eliminated key internal controls that were put in place to reduce the risk of improper payments. As a result, ineligible claimants received payments.
