Brown of Hoptown Chronicle 9:01 pm, March 15, 2021 Share on facebook Share on twitter The $1.9 trillion coronavirus economic relief package that Congress passed and President Joe Biden signed into law last week has generated extensive coverage of the benefits to individual Americans through stimulus checks, unemployment supplements and increased child tax credits.  For example, an individual making less than $75,000 will receive a $1,400 stimulus check, and the $300-a-week unemployment supplements will continue until Sept. 6. The increased child tax credit is $3,600 for children up to age 5 and $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17.

Judge Burdette retiring after 30 years of public service

A veteran judge is turning in his gavel, at least in terms of the daily docket. Jeffrey T. Burdette, Chief Circuit Judge for the 28th Judicial Circuit, has announced that he is retiring after 30 years of public service. His last day on the bench will be March 16. But Judge Burdette isn t totally done with the law. He has been asked by Kentucky Chief Justice John Minton Jr. to become a Special Judge and will travel across the commonwealth to hear various felony cases and civil mediations when home-based judges aren t available.

Andy Beshear said, adding that the trend appears to be continuing. On Monday, the governor reported 1,268 new cases of COVID-19, the lowest daily number of cases in the last four weeks. Kentucky also recorded 39 virus-related deaths. Since March, 347,836 Kentuckians have tested positive for COVID-19 and 3,460 have died of the virus.

City of Allen approves inter-local agreement with Prestonsburg Police

According to Prestonsburg city officials, leaders in the city of Allen terminated their police presence in early January. City officials say this decision was made in the best interest of the community. After the termination of police presence, both Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and the Prestonsburg Police Department were contacted to give contract law enforcement proposals to Allen city commissioners. Upon reviewing the proposals, Allen City Commissioners voted unanimously to enter an inter-local agreement with the City of Prestonsburg for police protection. Before taking affect, Prestonsburg Mayor Les Stapleton says that Prestonsburg City Council will need to approve the agreement in their next meeting on Jan. 25.

Trigg court approves clerk budget

In other business: •Magistrates approved transfers of $3,000 to the coroner’s program to be used for general expenses and $100 to the Property Valuation Administrator Board of Assessment Appeals. •The court approved a list of expenditures as of Dec. 7, that totaled $214,094.76. •Magistrates approved a second reading of an ordinance changing the speed limit on Kings Chapel Road from 55 to 45 miles per hour. The change affects the entire road. Alexander said the road signs have been ordered, and the law takes effect with publication of the ordinance. •The judge-executive said the county’s recent Tire Amnesty Day went well, with some 4,000 tires collected in the local community.
