Kentucky hopes to open more classrooms as K-12 staff get COVID vaccines

As Kentucky expects to complete first COVID-19 vaccine doses for K-12 educators and staff by the end of this week, Gov. Andy Beshear said the state is looking at plans to bring more students back to classrooms starting March 1.

(WAVE) - Some Kentucky teachers have already received COVID-19 vaccines despite the state’s rollout for school employees The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) reported it is currently aware of at least six school districts that have offered vaccines to some school staff including Ballard County Public Schools, Taylor County Public Schools, Campbellsville Independent Schools, Bowling Green Independent District, Warren County Public Schools, and Christian County Schools. A KDE spokesperson could not confirm how many employees had been vaccinated.

Trigg County Hospital Gearing Up For Community Vaccine Distribution

The phase included allowing all healthcare workers who wanted a vaccine a chance to get one. Hospital CEO John Sumner said the hospital has approximately 200 vaccines in stock and are awaiting approval from Dr. Steven Stack, Kentucky Public Health Commissioner, to move to the next phase. Sumner added hospital officials are ready to move into plan 1B, which allows frontline essential workers and people 75 or older a chance to get the vaccine. When they get the approval needed, plans are to use the Trigg County Recreation Complex as a distribution site. Sumner noted he understands this has been very confusing, and they want everyone to get the vaccine as soon as possible.
