Public deserves details on grand jury decision in fatal Rockfield shooting

The fatal shooting of Russell Heard on his property in February was nothing short of a tragedy. Heard, 74, a farmer in the Rockfield community, was a respected citizen who will be sorely missed by his many friends and family. News last week that a Warren County grand jury failed to indict the shooter who was charged with first-degree manslaughter in Heard’s death is nothing short of a mystery. Here is what we do know based on media accounts of police reports and court proceedings. Daniel W. Moore arrived at the Heard property on Galloway Mill Road looking for Bradley Heard, Russell Heard’s son, who lived on the property. Moore later told police he had gone to the property to retrieve a gun that had been taken from him.

April 8, 2021 The eyes of the world will turn to Louisville this weekend for the 147th running of the Kentucky Derby   but the U.S. Department of Justice beat them by a few days, announcing a major ongoing investigation of the city s police department. Two major Republican figures in Kentucky politics also weighed in on racism in America, though one took a pass when it came to voting on a hate crimes bill.

Systemic racism: In Daniel Cameron s dangerous mind, it doesn t exist

In the wake of Derek Chauvin’s conviction for the murder of George Floyd, President Joseph Biden said something powerful. He acknowledged a truth reasonable people know, but it was great to hear an American president speak it. Biden stood tall, sober and resolutely affirmed racism is a “stain on the soul” of America. Days later, Cameron sat in his liar’s chair (any chair he occupies) on the liars’ television network (Fox News) and condemned Biden. In Cameron’s world, Biden was not exhibiting leadership and attempting to move America beyond its racial nastiness by forcing it to face its sins. No, no. By Cameron’s twisted logic, Biden was exacerbating the problem  an imaginary one at that.

Mitch McConnell, the leader from Middle America

 | Print this article LEXINGTON, Kentucky When most people think of Addison Mitch McConnell and his impact on politics, they think of the U.S. Capitol and the halls of power along the Potomac River. Often cast as the consummate D.C. insider, McConnell is an equally consummate Kentuckian who regularly tailgates before Louisville football games and hangs out with longtime friends at Cunningham’s Creekside, located along a tributary of the Ohio River. He is also an avid baseball fan, even if his major league team is the Washington Nationals. His rise in power began in 1985, when he was sworn in as the only Republican challenger to defeat an incumbent Senate Democrat in 1984. Its latest chapter involves his perch as the Republican leader of a Senate conference built up from its modern nadir by the rise of the Tea Party movement.
