Workers who lost their jobs after the explosion at the paper mill in Jay last spring can enroll for free at two nearby community colleges to help them find new jobs.
Pixelle Specialty Solutions, the mill owner, and the Maine Community College System announced Friday that 177 displaced workers have until next July to access the free classes.
The chief workforce development officer for the community college system, Dan Belyea, said in a prepared statement that Pixelle’s $1 million education fund presents an amazing opportunity.
Thomas College allocates $1.5 million from Alfond grant to Jobs for Maine’s Graduates program
The JMG program launched at Thomas in 2014 as a way to help high school students transition into the college environment.

WATERVILLE Thomas College has announced it will allocate a portion of the $13.5 million grant it received in October to its Jobs for Maine’s Graduates College Success program.
The grant was awarded to the college on West River Road in Waterville as part of the Harold Alfond Foundation’s $500 million investment aimed at boosting the Maine economy.
Jobs for Maine’s Graduates, known as JMG, is a nonprofit organization aimed at improving the state’s workforce and economy by partnering with secondary and post-secondary schools to provide students with opportunities and guidance to advance their careers.

FARMINGTON The Maine district office of the U.S. Small Business Administration presented Franklin Savings Bank with the SBA District Director Award during a virtual ceremony Dec. 3.
This award was received in recognition of the efforts taken by Franklin Savings to greatly increase the use of SBA programs in the bank’s lending portfolio.
