Silver City man convicted in federal carjacking and firearms case

ALBUQUERQUE - A Silver City man convicted of attempting to carjack a driver a gunpoint faces up to 22 years in federal prison. Daniel “Grumpy” Hernandez, 33, of Silver City was convicted by a federal jury on May 6 on seven counts of a 10-count indictment. Hernandez and his co-conspirator, Savannah Padilla, were indicted on Nov. 13, 2019. According to the plea agreement, Hernandez and Padilla demanded money from a driver at gunpoint, demanding the victim get out of the driver’s seat and into the back seat of the vehicle. The victim fled. The incident happened Sept. 7, 2018 and continued into the next day in Grant County.

Farmington police shoot person near Animas Street they say was armed

FARMINGTON An armed person was shot by law enforcement near Animas Street on the afternoon of May 10 and that the person has been transported at an area hospital, the Farmington Police Department reported.  The incident happened near the 100 block of West Animas Street, the agency posted at 5:10 p.m. on May 10 to its social media accounts. The injured suspect was then transported by paramedics to an area hospital for treatment. The suspect was not identified. The agency posted online that all officers and uninvolved citizens in the vicinity of the event were safe.  At about 5:45 p.m. Farmington Police Department spokesperson Nicole Brown told The Daily Times the agency has no additional details to share on the incident.

Shiprock man accused of threatening Salvation Army employee with knife

The defendant faces a fourth-degree felony count of aggravated assault. The defendant’s preliminary hearing is set for the morning of May 12 in Farmington Magistrate Court. FARMINGTON A Shiprock man is accused of lunging at a Farmington Salvation Army employee with a knife after trying to get a snack from the nonprofit organization. Melford Russell, 49, is accused of assaulting an employee of the Salvation Army thrift store at 316 W. Animas St. around 1:22 p.m. on April 26, according to court documents. He faces a fourth-degree felony count of aggravated assault and did not have legal representation on the morning of May 5.
