Origin III to be played on the Gold Coast

Origin III to be played on the Gold Coast Written by Tony Salerno on 11 July 2021 The Gold Coast will host game three of State of Origin after the NRL decided to change the venue due to growing COVID concerns in NSW. This will be the first time all three games are played in Queensland after game two was moved from Sydney and game three was shifted from Newcastle. Former Queensland Origin player and Gold Coast resident Kevin Campion says Newcastle’s loss is Queensland’s gain. While the Gold Coast will appreciate the fixture, he doesn’t believe it will have the same impact that State of Origin had in Townsville.

NRL 2021: North Queensland Cowboys, Anzac Round, Townsville s ties to Defence Force

With Townsville being the country s largest garrison town, the North Queensland Cowboys have an intrinsic and proud connection to the Australian Defence Force. The Australian Army even helped with building the club s first stadium before they entered the ARL competition in 1995. After being unable to host an Anzac Round match last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic - though they created their own Defence Round later in the season - the Cowboys feel privileged to do so on Saturday night when they face the Raiders at QCB Stadium. You look at the population of Townsville – around 200,000 – 13 percent either work directly for the Defence Force or have some sort of connection, whether that be through family or ex-military in the Defence Force, North Queensland CEO Jeff Reibel told NRL.com.

Dubbed The Entertainers , the Canterbury side which went all the way in 1980 to deliver the club its third premiership featured the three Mortimer brothers and the three Hughes boys. Steve, Peter and Chris Mortimer joined forces with Graeme, Mark and Garry Hughes to create a special piece of rugby league history as a brash young Canterbury side charged from eighth at the halfway point of the season to win 13 of their last 15 games and take the title. Canterbury arrived at a sun-drenched SCG on September 27, 1980 brimming with confidence after beating Easts 13-7 in the major semi-final a fortnight earlier to earn a week off and they made the perfect start when sharp shooter Steve Gearin landed an early penalty goal after Roosters forward Des O Reilly was pinged for a swinging arm.
