Thu May 06, 2021 - Midwest Edition West Side Tractor Sales Johnsburg High School senior Dawson Peter is operating the John Deere construction simulator, developing his skills on an excavator.  When Johnsburg High School community liaison Gus Schmid first heard about the John Deereexcavator/construction simulator, he knew it would be a valuable addition to JHS s vocational arts department. Unfortunately, the cost was prohibitive at that time. That s when Principal Kevin Shelton had an idea. He reached out to former Marengo superintendent, Dan Bertrand, who is program coordinator of McHenry County Cooperative for Employment Education, for funding ideas. Bertrand advised Schmid on Perkins grants and the best ways to get funding for vocational education resources.

The Western Depot in Yuba City, called “an old-fashioned hobby shop” by owner Robert McBratney Jr., has carved out a niche in the model railroad industry for 44 years with its impressive inventory, knowledgeable staff and timeless train decor. The Western Depot, one of the few remaining brick-and-mortar model train shops in the Capital Region, has been closed to walk-in customers due to the coronavirus pandemic since March 2020. McBratney, who says the store will reopen as soon as he deems it’s safe for customers and employees, says his business nonetheless has thrived through mail-order and internet sales, mainly because of its inventory of 14,000 items.

An administrative term of Jackson County Superior Court convened Dec. 7 at the Justice Center with Judges Brad Letts and Steve Warren presiding. Results of the term are listed below, with information obtained from records on file with the Jackson County Clerk of Court office. Defendants pleaded guilty unless indicated otherwise. In addition to dismissals and cases previously reported, dispositions included: James Parker Bryson, 23, Divide Drive, Cashiers, possess stolen firearm, sentence of not less than six nor more than 17 months suspended for 24 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $50 and costs; possess firearm by felon, sentence of not less than 10 nor more than 21 months suspended for 24 months and placed on special supervised probation on condition he serve 48 days active time, pay fine of $50 and costs and obtain substance abuse assessment, given credit for 48 days served.

District Court

A session of Jackson County District Court was held Dec. 15 at the Justice Center with Judge Donna Forga presiding. Results of the session are listed below, with information obtained from records on file with the Jackson County Clerk of Court office. Defendants pleaded guilty unless indicated otherwise. In addition to dismissals and infractions, dispositions included: David Todd Loftis, 31, Camp Creek Road, Whittier, possess stolen goods and larceny by trick, sentence of 90 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay fine of $50 and costs and not be on premises of NAPA, O’Malley’s or Ingles; two counts possess drug paraphernalia, sentence of 120 days suspended for 12 months and placed on supervised probation on condition he pay costs.
