Lana Negrete Appointed As Santa Monica s Newest Councilmember

Canyon News SANTA MONICA- On Tuesday, June 29, the Santa Monica City Council appointed Lana Negrete to the Council to fill the seat vacated by Kevin McKeown. Negrete, who was selected from 34 eligible candidates was sworn into her seat by City Clerk Denise Anderson-Warren. “It’s a special privilege to serve the community I love as a member of the City Council,” said Councilmember Lana Negrete. “I am ready and excited to roll up my sleeves and get to work with my Council colleagues and City staff as we lift up communitywide recovery and a strong future for Santa Monica.” As part of her application, Negrete expressed how she wanted to work with the Council to “work together as a collective to create sustainable solutions to the city’s issues, expand programs that need further expanding and to thoughtfully address the concerns of all residents from all corners of the city. A council that works together to serve the people of the city who depend on them.”

City opens application process to fill McKeown’s vacant council seat Jun. 05, 2021 at 6:00 am McKeown City Council has opened the application process to appoint a new member to fill the seat vacated by Kevin McKeown. Applications are due by noon on June 22 and will be reviewed by City Council during a June 29 meeting. The appointed member will serve the remainder of McKeown’s term until November 8, 2022. The City’s charter outlines that the appointment process should take place in the event of a vacated seat. McKeown’s seat will be declared vacant on June 11 and Council has 30 days to select a replacement. If they fail to do so, the City will move to an election.

City Manager selection process begins May. 17, 2021 at 6:00 am City Council finished its first round of interviews for Santa Monica’s next city manager this weekend, meaning the search for the city’s first permanent manager since Rick Cole resigned in April 2020 could soon be completed. Council conducted interviews throughout Friday and Saturday, according to a public notice posted on the Council’s agenda. They were held in closed session so little information is available on who the leading candidates are since city leaders have remained mum on the matter in an effort to retain the search’s integrity. Dilg, who took the reins as Interim City Manager in April 2020, announced her intention to leave the city back in December as her family relocates to pursue other public service ventures. A few months later, Santa Monica City Council unanimously directed staff to retain Lamont Ewell (who managed Santa Monica until 2009) of Ralph Andersen & Associates to search for a replace
