A CLIMBING instructor has died following a ‘freak’ accident at Quayfoot Buttress in Borrowdale. Kong Adventure Keswick confirmed today that one of its instructors Sam Pilcher had died following the incident on May 27. Mr Pilcher had been climbing with a friend when he fell sustaining ‘very serious injuries’, according to Keswick Mountain Rescue Team who assisted with the rescue. After receiving initial treatment on scene he was taken by air ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle. Mr Pilcher had recently joined Ambleside and Langdale Mountain Rescue Team. In a post Kong Adventure Keswick said: “It is with great sorrow that we share the news that one of our instructors lost his life last week.

Mountain rescue team assist climber with very serious injuries

Multiple emergency services were called out to assist a rock climber with very serious injuries  yesterday after a fall. Keswick Mountain Rescue Team were called on Thursday afternoon to assist a rock climber who suffered a fall on Quayfoot Buttress, Borrowdale. The fall was witnessed by someone in the nearby car park who called 999. Keswick MRT mobilised with two vehicles heading up valley. A small team ascended the crag to perform a roped rescue, lowering a team paramedic down to the casualty. The paramedic attached the casualty to himself and the rope system, descending to meet a reception party below.
