Photo Credit: Teesworks GE Renewable Energy (Paris, France) announced on March 10 that it plans to open a new blade manufacturing facility in Teesside, a conurbation, or extended urban area, in northeastern England that has recently been designated as one of the U.K.’s newest freeports. LM Wind Power (Kolding, Denmark) plans to set up and operate this plant which will be dedicated to the production of its 107-meter-long offshore wind turbine blades, a key component of GE’s Haliade-X, said to be the most powerful offshore wind turbine in operation today. Terms of the construction and financing of the new plant are in advanced stages of negotiation between the interested parties.

Acciona, SSE Renewables sign agreement for offshore wind development

(Alcobendas, Spain) and SSE Renewables (Perth, U.K.), part of the FTSE-listed SSE Plc (Perth, U.K.), have signed an exclusivity agreement to develop offshore wind power projects in Spain and Portugal. The companies will also jointly explore further opportunities in other potential markets. According to the agreement, Acciona and SSE Renewables will establish a 50-50 joint venture (JV) that will combine Acciona’s strength as developer and operator of onshore renewable facilities (primarily wind and photovoltaic) with SSE Renewables’ skills and experience in the development, construction and operation of some of what it says are the world’s leading offshore wind farms.

Photo Credit: GE Renewable Energy GE Renewable Energy (Paris, France) announced on Dec. 18 that it has been confirmed as preferred wind turbine supplier for Dogger Bank C, the third phase of the U.K.’s 3.6-gigawatt (GW) Dogger Bank Wind Farm, which is set to be the world’s largest offshore wind farm upon expected completion in 2026. The agreement includes GE’s up-scaled Haliade-X 14-megawatt (MW) wind turbines and a service supply agreement to provide operations and maintenance support for five years. The turbine supply agreement and service and warranty agreements for Dogger Bank C are expected to be finalized in Q1 2021, with turbine installation to begin in 2025.

Maine, U K sign agreement to advance offshore wind cooperation

On Dec. 10, Governor Janet Mills of Maine and the U.K.’s Minister of State at the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the RT Hon Kwasi Kwarteng MP, announced the signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation between the state of Maine and the U.K. to pursue ambitious advancement in clean energy technologies and mutually achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century or sooner. MoU expectations also ensure the promotion and fostering of sustainable growth, supporting innovation and strengthening the global response to climate change.   Specifically, the MoU commits Maine and the U.K. to collaborate and share resources to reduce emissions from heating and transportation and advance innovative offshore wind and green hydrogen technology, sectors in which the use of composites has advanced, from new, longer wind blades in offshore wind turbines, to storage tanks for hydrogen.
