CNA Staff, Dec 15, 2020 / 12:00 pm (CNA).- On Oct. 9, 2016, 12,000 people filled a soccer stadium in northern England for a momentous event. The edge of the pitch was lined by women in saris carrying bright umbrellas with silver fringes jingling in the breeze. Washington D.C., Mar 14, 2018 / 03:55 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- The U.S. bishops have voiced their strong support for a bill protecting individuals and institutions from discrimination by the federal government based on their beliefs about marriage, regardless of what those beliefs are.
“We welcome and applaud the recent reintroduction of the First Amendment Defense Act (FADA),” wrote Archbishop Joseph Kurtz of Louisville and Bishop James Conley of Lincoln in a March 14 statement. Archbishop Kurtz chairs the US bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty, while Bishop Conley is chairman of the Subcommittee for the Promotion and Defense of Marriage.
“In a pluralistic society, faith-based charitable agencies and schools should not be excluded from participation in public life by loss of licenses, accreditation, or tax-exempt status because they hold reasonable views on marriage that differ from the federal government’s view,” explained the bishops.

The Slovak Bishops Conference (KBS) supports vaccination against COVID-19. They issued a statement earlier in December in which they acknowledge that disinformation about the vaccination is spreading. They have addressed questions about ethical issues connected with the development and production of vaccines.
“The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that life and the physical body are precious gifts that God has entrusted us,” the statement of the conference reads. “We should reasonably take care of it and also take into consideration the needs of others and common well-being. An important part of life and health protection is also prevention against infectious diseases.”
