Guilty Plea Entered In Catawba County Murder Case, Minimum 18 Year Sentence Imposed Jeffrey Douglas Brittain Guilty Plea Entered In Catawba County Murder Case, Minimum 18 Year Sentence Imposed May 6, 2021 A Maiden man received a minimum prison sentence of 18 years following a guilty plea in Catawba County Superior Court. Jeffrey Douglas Brittain, who was 23-years-old at the time of his arrest in October, 2017, entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of 19-year-old Justin Smith. Brittain initially faced a felony murder charge that carried maximum penalties of death or life in prison. Superior Court Judge William Long sentenced Brittain to a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of close to 23 years in prison. WHKY reported on the case following the incident. Brittain shot through a window on September 28, 2017, and killed Smith while the victim was seated in a recliner at his home on Ball Park Road, near Buffalo Shoals Road, south of Newton.

Hickory Man Receives 8-11 Year Sentence Following Guilty Plea To Larceny, Drug Counts Jameson Acoya Kennedy Hickory Man Receives 8-11 Year Sentence Following Guilty Plea To Larceny, Drug Counts February 15, 2021 28-year-old Jameson Acoya Kennedy of Hickory will spend at least eight years in prison for convictions on multiple criminal offenses and admission of his status as a habitual felon in Catawba County Superior Court. The Honorable Nathaniel J. Poovey, Superior Court Judge from Catawba County, sentenced Kennedy to serve an active prison term of eight to 11 years last Wednesday, (February 10). Kennedy pleaded guilty to three counts of larceny of motor vehicle on July 29, 2019, and possession of methamphetamine on October 7, 2019, and sentencing was continued from those settings pending the defendant’s completion of a rehabilitation program that was not finished.
