The Catholic Church says it s shamed and saddened by abuse in the church. The church has opened its evidence at the Inquiry into abuse in care on how it s handled complaints. (Video first published March 2021). It is also calling on anyone with personal information on the matter to come forward and speak with them. The allegations were made at a Royal Commission of Inquiry hearing on Tuesday by Keith Wiffin, a former ward of the state who lived at Epuni Boys’ Home in Lower Hutt in the 1970s. A victim of sexual abuse at the home when he was 11 Wiffin, now 61, said he never personally experienced the practice himself, but had learnt the Church was investigating the claims.

KITCHENER A bill that would guarantee 10 paid sick days per year for all workers in Ontario was voted down 20 to 55 at Queen’s Park Monday. Out of the seven local MPPs, only three were present at Queen’s Park and able to vote on Bill 247 due to COVID-19 protocols. Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife voted in favour of the bill. In a statement, she said in part, “It is clearer than ever that the province needs to do the right thing and provide Ontario’s workers with the ability to stay home if they are sick… Paid sick days are a key tool for slowing and stopping this cycle of transmission.”

As the Ford government rolled out its recently announced Emergency Child Care for Critical Frontline Workers on Monday, staff at Emmanuel at Brighton Child Care in Waterloo staged a day of advocacy in protest of a perceived lack of support for childcare workers across the province. The scheduled walk off was accompanied by a virtual livestream through the centre’s Facebook page, with scheduled guest speakers including local dignitaries, centre management and parents of children that attend the childcare space.
Speaking on behalf of the workers at Emmanuel at Brighton was staff spokesperson Emilie Borghese, who said the decision to withdraw service and go without pay was not one that was taken lightly. Borghese called the lack of prioritization in the vaccine roll out for childhood educators and childcare staff “dangerous and negligent”, as staff work in close quarters with unmasked children on a regular basis. Advocating on behalf of all early childhood educators,
