Scottish Canals winter work programme complete May 20, 2021, by Zlatan Hrvacevic
Scottish Canals has reopened the canal network across the country following one of the largest winter work programmes of recent years seeing more than £16.5m spent on improvement works on canal infrastructure and operational equipment.
Works included major investment from replacing lock gates on the Caledonian and Crinan Canals to restoring the Union Canal following a breach in August 2020 and renewing the coating on the world’s only rotating boat lift, The Falkirk Wheel.
“Our improvement works ensure that Scotland’s canal network is not only fit for purpose but also enables future investment in tourism and businesses across the country safeguarding local economies,” said Catherine Topley, CEO of Scottish Canals.
Magnet fishing is to be allowed on Scottish canals from Saturday in what is being described as a UK first.
The national body, Official Magnet Fishing Scotland, has been granted scheduled monument consent (SMC) from Historic Environment Scotland (HES) which will allow the pastime on the canal network for the first time.
Members of the group will now be able to use their high-powered magnets on Scottish canals to fish out metal objects while also helping keep the inland waterways clean.
Elly McCrone, HES director of heritage, said: “We have been working with Scottish Canals for many years to ensure the ongoing protection and management of Scotland’s historic canal network.

Magnet fishing - where people hunt for metal submerged in canals and rivers - is to be allowed in Scotland s canals for the first time.
The pastime increased in popularity in Scotland during last year s lockdown.
However, Saturday will be the first time it is officially permitted in a Scottish canal.
The national body, Official Magnet Fishing Scotland, has been granted permission for members to fish in Edinburgh.
The permission was granted by Historic Environment Scotland, which said further applications were being submitted for Inverness and Glasgow in the months ahead.
