In 2019, when President Uhuru Kenyatta landed at the Kisii High School aboard a Kenya Air Force aircraft, an MP had arrived earlier in a cab to join locals in welcoming him.
But the president’s security detail would not let the taxi in and the MP had to alight and walk into the school compound. He did not even have a bodyguard.
It was the Bonchari MP John Oyioka
(pictured). He was that unassuming and carried himself with no self-importance.
Stood out
Such was the simplicity of the humble MP who died last week aged 69. Averse to controversy and confrontational politics, Oyioka stood out among his colleagues. He was a leader who put ahead the interests of his people.

The trust and faith the first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, had in Simeon Nyachae manifested in his being appointed Rift Valley’s Provincial Commissioner after independence.
The province at the time, and indeed during the one-party rule, was no ordinary station because Kenyatta had a lot of business and political interests in the region.
And there was no better person to oversee these interests than Nyachae, a man whose father, Chief Musa Nyandusi, happened to be Kenyatta’s confidant.

As Kenya s first Attorney General (AG) Charles Njonjo turns 101 years today, we take a look at his role in both Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel A rap Moi’s governments and how much power the only surviving member of Kenya’s Independent Cabinet wielded.
In both the Kenyatta and Moi Cabinets only the foolhardy stepped on Njonjo’s toes.
Both Presidents took the man, who had a penchant for pin-striped Savile Row three-piece suits invariably accessorised with a fresh carnation on the lapel, micro-dotted shirts and ornate timepieces, seriously.
During his colourful and often controversial career as Attorney General and Cabinet Minister, he often rode in the limousines of Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel arap Moi, and participated in the selection of ministers, ambassadors and other key members of Government.
