The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) has advised its members to stay put as their strike over poor working conditions heads to its 40th day.
Even though the union had a sitting with the Ministry of Health and reached an agreement on December 31, 2020, the government’s commitment in signing is the missing link in the stalemate that has crippled the health sector.

Over 400 nurses and medics have been locked out of their workplaces in Kisumu County after the government moved to institute disciplinary measures against staff who have been on strike.
According to an inside source at the county government, Health Chief Officer Gregory Ganda stated that the nurses had deserted their work by participating in the strike.
The county government halted the payment of the 428 medics’ salaries and issued them with show-cause letters which they will need to respond to in 7 days.

Chief Officer for Medical Services Isaac Omeri said the healthcare workers would only be reinstated to the payroll if they return to work.
But Omeri was reluctant to comment on the fate of officials from the health department whose pay was withheld.
