Kenya Airways (KQ) pilots are against proposals by the national carrier to have them paid per trip.
KQ, which had been struggling even before the coronavirus pandemic, is floating the idea as part of a wide range of cost cutting measures to stay afloat.
Kenya Airline Pilots Association (Kalpa) secretary-general Murithi Nyagah said that even though the move would help the carrier reduce its wage bill, it breached mutual agreements between the two parties.
“We are not aware of any plans by KQ to pay pilots per trip. After all, we are opposed to it,” said Nyagah in a statement.

Kenya Airways (KQ) pilots have opposed the latest wave of pay cuts by the national carrier.
Kenya Airline Pilots Association (Kalpa) termed the move to effect pay reductions of as much as 30 per cent an illegality that goes against their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with the airline.
“These unilateral actions by KQ management are not only a breach of the CBA but also an illegality in as far as the laws of Kenya are concerned. Kalpa will not condone or tolerate such impunity; we are addressing these unlawful actions,” said Kalpa Chief Executive Murithi Nyagah in a memo to members ahead of a virtual meeting yesterday.

Kenya Airways (KQ) will have to go back to the drawing board after the Labour Court ordered the airline to pay pilots their full salaries during the period they were on leave due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the alternative, Justice Maureen Onyango ordered that KQ should assign the leave taken proportionately to the salary earned during the period, and should not punish pilots who defied a directive to work for more than 12 hours.
The judge, however, dismissed the pilots’ application to punish KQ management for failing to obey orders.
The court apportioned blame for last year’s stalemate to the airline and its employees, finding that the decision by the KQ management to punish pilots who refused to work beyond 12 hours was insensitive, but also that pilots ought to have cooperated with the airline owing to the harsh effects of the pandemic on business.
