GENESEE COUNTY, MI A retired Genesee County District Court judge has been chosen as the county’s first chief public defender.
The county Board of Commissioners voted Wednesday, March 17, to appoint Nathaniel C. Perry III to the post, picking him over two other attorneys who were also finalists for the position.
A 24-year-old Mt. Morris Township man has been charged with 11 felonies after he allegedly fled a traffic stop and fired a gun before he was shot by a Michigan State Police trooper.
Michigan teens charged in Russian roulette death of friend

BURTON, MI Three teens have been charged with manslaughter in the death of their friend, killed during an apparent game of Russian roulette.
Genesee County Prosecutor David S. Leyton told MLive his office this week authorized a charge of involuntary manslaughter against the teen males, two who are now 17 and one who is now 19. The youngest of the trio is charged as a juvenile as he was 16 when the fatal shooting occurred, while the other two are charged as adults.
The names of the two adult defendants are being withheld pending their arraignment in Genesee County District Court.

FLINT, Mich. (CN) Lawyers clashed in a court hearing Tuesday morning where the defense tried to convince the judge to toss an indictment against former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder over his role in the Flint water contamination crisis.

FLINT, Mich. (CN) Pretrial hearings in the criminal case against former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder over his role in the Flint water contamination crisis continued Tuesday after a week of review by a district court judge who was not certain of his authority in the sprawling scandal.
Last week, Genesee County District Court Judge William Crawford was open about his lack of experience for this type of case and admitted he was not sure he could rule on a motion to dismiss filed by the defense. But he said he reviewed the motions and responses and was now convinced that he could move forward.
