Last Comment: May 21, 2021 6:50 am ET | 9 Comment(s) | Jump to Comments In this week s edition of Rewind Robert Smith recalls a very important date in the history of Canadian harness racing. It was 60 years ago that nighttime racing finally came to the Province of Ontario. On the evening of May 17, 1961 with a post time of 8:00 p.m., it all happened at Western Fair Raceway in London, Ontario. A few recollections of the times and some old photographs help to recall this very special moment in our sport s history. (Photo by Claus Andersen courtesy of Canadian Sportsman) For many years, in fact for several decades, everyone involved with harness racing in Ontario longed for racing under the lights to make its way to the Province. It seemed like every other area where the sport was conducted it had already arrived. In 1940 nighttime racing debuted at two New York State tracks; first at Roosevelt and a short time later that fall at Batavia. The next year Saratoga joined in as

Health advocates praise productive legislative session Shawna De La Rosa | Apr 13, 2021 Share this:     Vincent DeMarco, Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative president, said the state’s General Assembly passed major bills that will work in tandem to improve health care and services. “These bills address the critical problem of health inequities in our state and will help bring new health resources to underserved areas. They will also make insurance more affordable to young adults and make it easier for people who lose their jobs to apply for affordable health insurance through the Maryland Health Connection. We congratulate the lawmakers who supported these important measures and urge Governor Hogan to sign them into law.”

Looking Back, Feb. 24

• High Mountains Helicopter Skiing planned to start flying powder freaks to unskied peaks at the south end of the Teton Range and the adjacent Snake River Range. Pilot Floyd Kjerstad would ferry Robin “Boomer” McClure and his skiers to virgin peaks such as Creampuff, Hoback and Ramshorn. • Yellowstone National Park and the Bridger-Teton National Forest created the largest “natural burn” area in the country, where naturally caused fires on nearly 2.3 million acres would be allowed to burn under certain conditions. Although both agencies had allowed lightning-caused fires to burn over the past several year, the joint plan was unique in that it allowed fire to cross boundaries from one agency’s land to other’s.
