DMCH Director Brig Gen Nazmul Haque said the patients were in critical condition.
The fire broke out in the ICU ward on the second floor of the new building at around 8 am on Wednesday.
Soon after, he saw smoke spreading out from the ICU bed.
The sudden and awful incident forced him to evacuate the ICU and shift his ailing brother Abdullah Al Mahmud, 48, a critical Covid-19 patient, like attendants of 13 other ICU patients there.
Three of those ICU patients, including Bulbul s brother, died after they were relocated.
Two other dead were identified as Engineer Kazi Golam Mostafa, 66, of Chandpur, and Kishore Chandra Roy, 70, of Tangail.
Some of the 14 critical patients were taken to a nearby coronary care unit (CCU) on the same floor of the 10-storey building whereas some were shifted to other wards or hospitals.

on the third floor of DMCH’s new building.
All the patients were transferred from the ICU after the fire broke out.
But the three patients who were on life support died while undergoing
treatment at the CCU later, the DMCH director said.
The fire broke out around 8:10am and caused dense smoke inside the ICU.

Relatives of the three victims who lost their lives in a fire in the intensive care unit of COVID ward have complained of wrongful death caused by Dhaka Medical College Hospital authorities. );

They alleged that the patients ‘suffocated to death due to the smoke as they were not rushed out’ after fire broke out in the ICU.
