Irish Eye on Hollywood: John Duddy Boxes to the Big Screen

First it was the Irish wrestler Sheamus appearing in the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. And now another world-class Irish athlete – boxer John Duddy – is making the leap to the big-screen. The Derry native will appear in the upcoming Robert De Niro movie Hands of Stone. The film tells the tumultuous life story of boxer Roberto Duran, with De Niro playing his trainer Ray Arcel. Arcel was active in the fight game for six decades and is said to have trained nearly 20 world champs. The film also stars Edgar Ramirez (as Duran) as well as John Turturro. Duddy will appear in the film as Scottish boxer Ken Buchanan. ♦

Former boxing champ Alex Arthur is a winner, but will he deliver for Alba?

For the hitter turned out to be Alex Arthur, the former super-featherweight boxing champion of the world from Edinburgh, who will be one of the four Alba candidates in the Lothians regional list contest on May 6. The self-confessed “apprentice politician” got a big lesson on day one in the job when his Twitter account turned out to have some ill-judged remarks about Romanians and beggars, but Arthur made a sincere apology and says he will now think twice about what he says and does.

It was a battle which went one way, then the other, and summed up the slightly bonkers world of boxing in the 1970s. The contest featured the little Scot Ken Buchanan, who had become a sporting sensation in his homeland, pitted against the dangerous Ruben Navarro, the “Maravilla Kid”, who gained the support of almost the whole crowd when the event was staged in his native Los Angeles.
