Established as a district on July 1, 1982, Khushab enjoys a unique topography in Punjab. Lying along the right bank of River Jhelum, it covers an area of 6,511sqkm and comprises serene and picturesque mountains, as well as fertile plains. Khushab city is a centuries-old settlement. Local researchers like Imtiaz Hussain Imtiaz claim the city was named by Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi, deriving its nomenclature from two Persian words Khush meaning sweet and Aab meaning water. A Sher Shah Suri era mosque, Sharfuddin Masjid, built with mud and clay bricks still exists in the walled city having 11 gates.
Unlike other districts, at least in Punjab, the city has not been made the headquarters of the district from which it derives its name. Rather Jauharabad, an adjacent town located over 7.5km away from Khushab, serves the purpose. During debates on the political role of Islam and secularism vis-à-vis Pakistan, ‘moderates’ often point out that since there is no concept of the Church in Islam, the faith is inherently secular. They argue that secularism is thus a product of Christian societies because the Church there was once an intermediary institution between man and God, and enjoyed political authority.
So, from the 18th century onwards, when modernity and its many products created new realities, these required a new political paradigm to operate in. It is from this that secularism emerged, to separate the Church from the state and create spaces for the new realities to expand and thrive. Church authority had by then begun to be suspected as an impediment to human progress.

NAB is again making headlines – but for all the wrong reasons. In an embarrassing few days, various high courts have issued detailed judgments involving senior PML-N leaders: Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Khawaja Asif and Ahsan Iqbal. In all three cases, the courts have held that there is no evidence of financial gain or loss to the national exchequer. In addition, there is no evidence of kickbacks or corruption on the part of any of the three PML-N leaders.
This is not just an embarrassment for NAB but also exposes the anti-corruption narrative of the sitting government. Initiating corruption cases against several PML-N leaders in the last three years, NAB has failed on every single occasion to establish any financial irregularity.
