West Branch to open classes after Labor Day again | News, Sports, Jobs

BELOIT West Branch students will continue to start school after Labor Day next year. The school board Wednesday night approved the 2021-2022 school calendar that includes the first day for students Sept. 8, last day June 2 and graduation May 29. The board also considered a calendar that included the first day for students Aug. 31, with no school Sept. 3 and Labor Day, last day May 26 and graduation May 22. Community members in the past have pushed for a student start date to remain the traditional Wednesday after Labor Day, allowing students to participate in the Canfield Fair without missing school. Past boards have been split on the decision, however following the wishes of the community over recommendations of a faculty committee.

Jan 27, 2021 SALEM– Slim (Oscar Willis) Davidson, 77, of Salem died at 6:45 p.m. Sunday at Salem Regional Medical Center due to multiple health issues and COVID. He was born on March 5, 1943 in Alliance, Ohio, son of the late William and Mary (Burt) Davidson. Slim has lived most of his life in this area. A graduate of Alliance High School, he was a US Navy veteran, having served during the Vietnam War. He was formerly employed at the A&P meat packing plant in Salem, then moved on to the Robert Bycroft School on the janitorial staff until his retirement. He was a people person and enjoyed socializing where ever he went. The Canfield Fair was a major high point every year. Being a former member of the Salem Jaycees was a perfect fit for his character and humor. He was also known to serve as Santa Claus for the club.

Rodney Arter, president of the Ohio Fair Managers Association Board of Directors, expressed disappointment with Gov. Mike DeWine’s veto of legislation to allow fairs to operate as usual in 2021. The decision could have a major impact on the 175th annual Canfield Fair, set for Sept. 1-6, and 175th Trumbull County Fair, set for July 13-18.

Dec 30, 2020 BOARDMAN Robert D. Calhoun, 90, passed away peacefully late Friday evening, Dec. 25, 2020, at Shepherd of the Valley in Boardman. Robert, known as “Bob,” was born Sept. 30, 1930, in Flint, Mich., the son of the late Ernest and Helen Gault Calhoun. Bob was a 1948 graduate of Bendle High School in Burton, Mich. In 1951, he enlisted in the Marine Corps. and served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to his hometown after his service. He began working for General Motors Fisher Body No. 2 in Flint, Mich., as a worker’s compensation administrator. Bob and his family relocated to Youngstown after accepting a transfer to the Lordstown Plant, from where he retired with more than 30 years of service with General Motors.
