Winter is well and truly on its way with temperatures set to drop around the country over the next few days.
MetService forecasts fronts will move over the country from the southwest on Tuesday, bringing heavy rain to the west and strong northwesterlies in the east.
Heavy rain watches are in place for northern Fiordland, Buller, the ranges of northwest Nelson, the Tararua Range and Mt Taranaki.
Strong wind watches are in place for the Canterbury High Country, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa.
Heavy rain and strong wind watches have been issued for the Canterbury High Country. A release from the MetService on Monday morning, says a series of fronts are forecast to move over southern and central New Zealand from the southwest on Tuesday, bringing periods of heavy rain in the west, and strong northwesterlies in the east. The heavy rain watch for the Canterbury High Country, for the headwaters of the Canterbury lakes and rivers is valid from 1am to 6pm on Tuesday. There will be periods of heavy rain and rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria within 15 kilometres east of the main divide, the release says.
After a warm, wet, and unsettled weekend, MetService is
forecasting an abrupt midweek plunge in temperatures to
remind us that winter is just around the corner.
High
temperatures cling on today (Monday) and most of Tuesday as
a pulse of warmer air from the northwest washes over
Aotearoa, with many centres expecting overnight temperatures
in the mid to high teens. However, a cold southerly change
spreads up the South Island on Tuesday, and over the North
Island on Wednesday.
“The difference will be most
notable in the South Island, with a few locations set to see
around a ten degree drop in temperature,” stated
